SAN
DIEGO URBAN LEAGUE PARTNERS WITH 4SHO ENTERTAINMENT AND
ESPORTS ARENA TO PRODUCE EDUCATIONAL GAMING TOURNAMENT
Area Children Given the Opportunity
to Shine in High-Tech Battle of Words
Escondido,
CA (April 11, 2003)
The
San Diego Urban League,
a non-profit organization, will be hosting the Verbosity
Tournament Series, a premiere entertainment multimedia,
multi-player gaming event on Saturday,
April 19, 2003. The event takes place between
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
at ESPORTS ARENA,
located in Pacific Theatres Gaslamp 15 at 5th and G Streets
in downtown. Held in cooperation with 4
SHO Entertainment Enterprises and ESPORTS
ARENA, the free, one-day tournament offers more than
$10,000 in prizes. Participants will compete in Verbosity
- Tools for the Mind, an entertaining, vocabulary-based
game developed by 4SHO Entertainment Enterprises, and tremendously
popular with children in San Diego school districts and
youth organizations.
The
Verbosity Tournament Series is the only event of
its kind in the nation, offering gamers the opportunity
to challenge one another to a high-tech battle of words.
Refreshingly, there is none of the usual shooting, explosions
or violence found in 90% of computer games. Instead, the
adrenaline rush that players experience comes from the sense
of achievement they experience as they are challenged to
define words and utilize strategic thinking while progressing
through levels of increasing difficulty.
Prize
and product sponsors of the Verbosity Tournament Series
include Cookies by Design, Boomer's,
Wal Mart, K-Mart, Regal Entertainment Group, Kinko's Vista,
and Blockbuster Video. Players will be provided
by many organizations including Sojourner Truth Learning
Academy, St. Stephens High School, High Tech High School,
the Encanto Boys and Girls Club, The Yo Spot, The Oasis
Project and the Jackie Robinson YMCA.
Verbosity
- Tools for the Mind was developed by 4SHO
Entertainment Enterprises to be fun and entertaining
while providing an educational and non-violent gaming experience
for children eight years old and up. The rules are simple
and can be learned in minutes while playing the game. Children
do not realize that they are actually learning as they compete,
but the substantial increase in their comprehension levels
is measurable.
San
Diego has one of the highest percentages of Internet connectivity
in the country and is a leader in providing quality educational
infrastructure, programs and materials. Dignitaries from
across the spectrum of the education, political and entertainment
fields have been invited to cheer on the 256 area children
of all ages and backgrounds participating in the tournament.
"One
of the primary goals of the San
Diego Urban League is to reach out to young people and
help them realize their full potential," said Maurice
Wilson, Director of Employment, Training and Technology
for the San Diego Urban League.
"This tournament encourages kids to be the best, offering
them a positive, wholesome and fun activity to improve their
vocabulary and communications skills."
Specifically
designed for tournament play, ESPORTS
ARENA can accommodate up to 24 four-person teams simultaneously,
making it ideal for Verbosity- Tools for the Mind's multi-player
format. Offering the latest high-speed equipment in an ultra-modern,
state-of-the-art environment, ESPORTS
ARENA provides every possible amenity for everyone from
the casual player to the hardcore gamer.
"We
are very supportive of worthwhile causes such as the San
Diego Urban League," said John Varley, chairman
and CEO, ESPORTS ARENA.
"We have offered our facilities for this event because
we believe that the integration of technology into the education
process will be key to the future of our children."
When
asked why the company has made Verbosity available to the
various organizations and for tournaments, Lou Ward,
President of 4 SHO Entertainment Enterprises said, matter-of-factly,
"We're transforming the learning experience for children
from 'Why I have to know' to 'Why I want to know'. It makes
all the difference in the world."
