The Escondido Heat Red Under 11 Team has qualified to
go to the Super Series National Championship World Series
and is headed for Sherwood, Arkansas this summer. Now
they just have to raise the funds to get there.
The
team needs to raise approximately $35,000 to cover family
travel, lodging and equipment costs. An expense account
has been established for the team. Various fund-raising
activities are planned. 4SHO Entertainment Enterprises,
an Escondido-based company, is allowing the team to use
its just-released, educational family computer game to
help raise funds. 4SHO donated 15 copies of Verbosity
- Tools for the Mind! to the team at no cost. The
company is donating half of the $49.95 selling price from
subsequent sales to the team from each sale.
Lou
Ward, Marketing Director for 4SHO whose son plays on the
team, convinced the company to help the team raise money.
"I looked at the amount of money it would take to
send a team to Sherwood and for our family to accompany
my son," expressed Ward. " I got our company
to see this as a worthwhile cause. We can help fulfill
a need and it helps families find out about our game.
We hope others in the community will get behind us and
support us in any way they can."
The
Escondido team qualified for the Championship tournament
by winning the Championship of the Super Series Thanksgiving
Weekend tournament held in San Marcos, CA. The Super Series
11U National Championships will be held in Sherwood, Arkansas
from July 27 to Aug. 4, 2002.
Tommy
Cheek, coach for the team explained, "We are thrilled
and excited to be going to the World Series for travel
baseball teams. We will have to mix in our fund-raising
efforts with practices and games. We appreciate 4SHO stepping
up and helping us."
The
team doesn't want to wait until the last minute to try
and start fund-raising. Cheek continued, "We've already
started raising money using scratchers and some of our
parents have gotten their employers to donate sponsorship
checks. We've held a two-day car wash and a garage sale
is planned for this month (March). We're determined to
get to Arkansas and represent Escondido!"
